Working With The Smithsonian

Gabriel Sanchez is recognized for his research on whaling by indigenous peoples
Gabriel Sanchez

Gabriel Sanchez, a recent graduate in anthropology, completed his McNair Scholars research project on whaling by indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest. He traveled to Washington, D.C., to study the Smithsonian Institution’s collection of harpoon fragments, and then the Smithsonian shipped artifacts to him in Oregon for more analysis. Last fall, he presented his work at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science conference.

Sanchez received an outpouring of university support for his Smithsonian visit. He has also been the subject of a documentary by Latino Roots in Oregon, a multi-faceted collaboration between the University of Oregon and partners to honor and preserve the state’s Latino heritage.
